What is RFID?
The concept of RFID systems originated in the 1940's as a means of distinguishing friendly aircraft from enemy aircraft. Today, RFID is a wireless data capture technology where each item is uniquely identified. Unlike bar codes, line of sight isn't necessary so the label can be read even if attached inside the container. These features enable RFID to create greater visibility in supply chain management, leading to collaborative planning between enterprises. End results are increased efficiencies, theft prevention and reduced costs for corporations and end consumers. Smurfit-Stone is a member of EPC Global.
