At Smurfit-Stone, our Pulp and Paper research and development efforts make use of pilot paper making equipment as well as first rate laboratory facilities. We utilize these resources to develop and evaluate new processes, equipment and furnishes.

The pilot plant focuses its efforts on stock preparation, pulping, refining, and calendaring. Our pulp lab conducts research in the following areas:

• Kajaani: Fiber length analyzing
• Pulmac: Fines and debris determination
• Image analysis
• Pulp and Paper Testing

In addition to the project work and technical service support we conduct, Smurfit-Stone fosters the exchange of ideas through various groups such as TAPPI, AF&PA, FBA and others.
